The Three Stars to Happiness

In Chinese mythology, there are three gods called 福 - Fortune, 祿 - Prosperity, 壽 - Longevity.  These gods are associated with the three stars within the constellation of the Big Dipper. The people believed that the three gods can bestow the people with Fortune, Prosperity and Longevity.  To which the gods are named accordingly.  However 喜 - Happiness,  god of “Happiness”, is not seen in the constellation.  According to Chinese folklore, the god of “Happiness” was once mortal and a devout worshiper of the three gods. When he became a “god” through cultivation or monasticism.  He then spread happiness to the people through his practice.

During festival celebrations, 福 - Fortune, 祿 - Prosperity, 壽 - Longevity and 喜 - Happiness is displayed across various objects. For example, the deer’s pronunciation (represented with deer antlers) is similar to 祿 - Prosperity. The crane represents 壽 - Longevity and blessings.  The peach symbolizes good health and long life.
